881.. Yo Ah Yo Ah..

I just watched Royston Tan's new movie '881' on last Sat. It's tacky, funny and sad. It's an unabashed hokkien musical set in Singapore. You get them actors breaking into a song and dance throughout the whole movie (machiam a Bollywood movie).

But I got to warn you, there are some parts of the movie which are really sad. The scene that really gets to me was the one when "Little Papaya" was in the hospital for the last time, and 'Auntie Lin' sang a tear-jerking hokkien song (and I realised lots of the hokkien songs in the movie are very sad).

When I was watching the movie, there was these two girls (strangers) seated beside me in the cinema, and I'm quite sure one of them were crying near the end and the other was handing tissue paper over to her. I also had to bit back tears at some points leh (how can a guy openly cry.. right..).

I really enjoyed the movie. Its worth the price of the ticket. Let's hope Royston Tan will continue to give us such poignant local favor movies for a long time to come.

hehe, I did not read this post of yours because I don't want to know the story before I go watch the movie. :) anyway, perhaps you might want to add a spoiler alert or somethin'

anyway, watched 881 yesterday.. not a bad show. think the key selling pt is the hokkien songs lol... finally got subtitles to understand them! i watched on a Monday nite and its a full house. amazing... my wife was weeping at the end of the show but i dun find the show tat sad leh... she say the lyrics of the final song v sad but i actually tot the way they sing it was quite funny leh..even the melody doesn't sound tat sad. There was a theme music in there tat was v good and sad but its not the final song lor. Mabbe i am more of an instrumental person rather than a song person :P
